Ine no Funaya
Ine no Funaya: The First Fishing Village in Japan Designated as an Important Preservation District
A Signature Sight of Kyoto by the Sea
The Funaya of Ine were the first fishing-village structures in Japan to be designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. They are one of the most iconic scenic attractions of northern Kyoto.

Funaya houses have a unique structure:
The first floor serves as a boathouse, storage area, and workspace, with a sloped floor designed so that boats can be pulled directly up from the water.
The second floor serves as the living quarters, and many Funaya are still inhabited today.
Some have even been converted into guesthouses, where visitors can stay and experience life in this extraordinary seaside village.

The rows of Funaya lining the bay are known collectively as the Funaya District.
Stretching out over the water, these seaside homes create a breathtaking and unforgettable coastal landscape.
